Cultivating Talent: Chinese program taps potential of outstanding youth

China is ramping up efforts to nurture exceptional young research talent ready to contribute to the country's socioeconomic development. Through a program launched by the China Association for Science and Technology, outstanding middle school students are given the opportunity to conduct hands-on research alongside top scientists. CGTN's Huang Yichang spoke to one promising teen to learn more about the program.

 

"During junior high school, I had a strong interest in chemistry. At that time, I liked to play an app called the container, just putting some bottles together and making them react. That's fascinating to me. Since that time, I wish that it could really come to me that one day I could go to a real laboratory."

 

A program geared toward cultivating talent has helped this young boy achieve his dreams sooner than he ever imagined.

 

Gifted youth in China like Zhaoran have access to additional programs outside standard high school subjects to do research with noted scientists and researchers from universities across the country.

This serves to cultivate top-tier talent for universities. By conducting high-level and meaningful research, we aim to enhance their innovation abilities."

 

Having participated in the scheme for a semester, Zhaoran has developed a deep fascination for the holographic printing technique that Professor Zhou and his team have dedicated themselves to.

The program has been in place in China for the past ten years. Wang Yuxuan, currently pursuing his PhD in optoelectronics, took part in 2016.

Innovation remains at the heart of Chinese modernization, and education is key.
